Opportunity MKE in Whitefish Bay
“Have you ever …
Wished for a safe neighborhood for you and your children?
Hoped for a high-performing school for your children?
Wanted access to good grocery stores?
Parks and green space?”
Opportunity MKE is a new program started by the Fair Housing Council which helps families move to low-poverty, high-opportunity neighborhoods and communities where children and families can have the best opportunity to thrive. Research has shown that children from families who move to high-opportunity neighborhoods are more likely to have significantly higher income, go to college, and less likely to be a single parent. Additional research shows mental and physical health benefits, like reduced rates of asthma, diabetes and obesity.
Bay Bridge has agreed to be part of their Opportunities Neighborhood Network (ONN). ONN partners assist in finding available housing and provide formal and informal support to Opportunity MKE families that move into the neighborhood. In the fall of 2020, Bay Bridge met with organizations from Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties to discuss ideas for engaging families and identifying landlords. Recently Shorewest realtors in WFB have requested education about this program and Bay Bridge is making this available to them. Bay Bridge and Shorewest are looking to collaborate going forward.
The Fair Housing Council has begun to work with families and there is interest in moving to Whitefish Bay. We need your help to identify landlords who would welcome section 8 housing. Additionally if you have a particular interest in welcoming families to Whitefish Bay, let us know.
