Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

Six year old Ruby Bridges stepped into the history books in 1960 when she integrated William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans becoming a national icon for the civil rights movement. Today her story continues to inspire the next generation of leaders to end racism together one step at a time.
Join us for Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day – Day of Dialogue, an afternoon of learning, reflection, and community connection honoring the courage and legacy of Ruby Bridges.
Event Schedule:
3:30-5:00 p.m. – Kids & Tweens Activities
- Learn how to ride a Milwaukee County Transit bus with a Bus Ambassador (bus parked outside the library!)
- Safety tips for pedestrians and travelers of all ages
- Free pizza for tweens
5:00-5:30 p.m. – Food & Conversation
Enjoy food provided by AARP and learn about building communities where people can age in place and move safely through walkable neighborhoods.
5:30-7:00 p.m. – Panel Discussion: A Day of Dialogue
Moderated by Aaron Bledsoe and the Milwaukee County Office of Equity, this powerful conversation will dig into questions like, What does it mean to have access to education? How do we ensure everyone feels safe traveling to school and throughout their community? How does Ruby Bridges’ story continue to shape the pursuit of equity today?
Come early for food and community, and stay for a dialogue you won’t want to miss.
